Clyde Edwards-Helaire
RB, LSU
Draft Projection: Round 2
NFL Comparison: Devonta Freeman
Edwards-Helaire is a small, shifty, and powerful runner who lacks the size to be a full workhorse but should be able to be a very good starter or major member of a committee in a pass-oriented offense. Edwards-Helaire’s biggest strength is as a receiver. He is considered to be the best route runner out of the backfield coming out of college since Christian McCaffery and has fantastic hands. Edwards-Helaire has the ability to line up as a receiver as well. After the catch and in the run game, he has the ability to create yards for himself. Edwards-Helaire’s major issues are his size and his pure speed, as he comes in at 5′ 7″, 207 lbs and ran a 4.6 40 yard dash. The speed will prevent him from scoring long and make him get fewer yards on big plays in general because the defense will catch up to him relatively quickly while his size will prevent him from managing a heavy workload. Most workhorses in the NFL are at least 10 pounds heavier than Edwards-Helaire and at least four inches taller, with Christian McCaffery being the one exception in terms of weight (and he’s a major outlier). Overall, Edwards-Helaire lacks the size to be a workhorse and the speed to be a home-run hitter, but he should be able to contribute as the primary running back in a pass-first offense due to his receiving abilities.
