Alvin Kamara

RB, Saints

Last year Alvin Kamara didn’t put up his typical numbers because of a torn MCL that he suffered in week 6. Many players would go on IR after a torn MCL, but Kamara decided to play through it. After that injury he obviously wasn’t the same player, but he was still able to put up 1,330 yards from scrimmage, 6 total touchdowns, and 81 receptions in 14 games. To put into perspective how much Kamara’s injury limited his production, through the first 5 games of the season Kamara was number one in the NFL in evaded tackles per attempt, meaning he was the most elusive running back in all of football. After the injury, his elusiveness rating fell to running back 40. Now that Kamara is healthy, we will see something similar to what we saw at the beginning of the season. In the first five games of the season Kamara had 583 yards from scrimmage, 2 total touchdowns, and 26 receptions. That amounts to 1,866 yards from scrimmage, 6 total touchdowns, and 83 receptions over the course of an entire season, which with the exception of the touchdowns is a monster season. It’s also worth noting that Drew Brees missed three of the five games Kamara was healthy in, so his numbers would have probably been even better had Brees been healthy. Obviously, those touchdown numbers are concerning (both through the first five weeks and the season as a whole) but they should not worry you for this year. Alvin Kamara was still the lead goal line back for the Saints last year, as he had seven goal line carries compared to Latavius Murray’s three. Kamara is also heavily involved in the passing game inside the 10 yard line, as he had seven targets, which was only two fewer than Michael Thomas. Kamara really just got unlucky last year in the sense that the Saints weren’t getting into the red zone as often and when he got the ball in the red zone he happened to be stopped just short of the end zone. It also didn’t help that Drew Brees missed 5 games. Next year, the Saints will still have a great offense and Kamara will be the primary red zone option, so expect him to get touchdowns at the rate he used to (31 touchdowns in his first 31 games). Overall, Kamara should be able to return to form this year and should be one of the top four players off the board.
