Christian McCaffrey

RB, Panthers

Christian McCaffrey is easily the best player in fantasy and drafting anyone other than him with the first pick would be a massive mistake. Last year McCaffrey had one of the best fantasy seasons of all time for a running back, with 2,392 yards from scrimmage, 19 total touchdowns, and 116 receptions. The Panthers have undergone quite a bit of change this offseason, as they added Teddy Bridgewater, who loves to check the ball down to running backs, to be their starting quarterback and got a new head coach and offensive coordinator. In addition they added Robby Anderson and improved their offensive line. All of this is great for McCaffrey. The offense as a whole will be much better than it was last year, and that will give McCaffrey more touchdown chances and more time on the field. In addition, if the panthers are winning games they are more likely to run the ball to drain the clock than if they were playing from behind and defenses won’t be able to focus all of their attention on McCaffrey like they have in the past. Some may be concerned that the new offense will spread the ball out more so McCaffrey won’t do as well, but that will be offset by the fact that McCaffrey will be on the field more. Also, the loss of Greg Olsen leaves touches up for grabs and McCaffrey will surely get some of them. The new offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, is a genius who just helped lead LSU to a national championship. He loves running backs with McCaffrey’s skillset, just look at what he did with Clyde Edwards-Helaire last year, so he will be able to find ways to get the ball in McCaffrey’s hands. McCaffrey is a very safe pick, as he has never missed a game due to injury and his floor is probably around 1,800 yards from scrimmage, 15 total touchdowns, and 90 catches. His ceiling, on the other hand, is probably 2,500 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 125 catches. Overall, McCaffrey had a historic season last year and the Panther’s changes this offseason give reason to believe he could be even better next year, so he should without a doubt be the top pick.
