David Johnson

RB, Cardinals

1200px-U+25CB.svg.png

David Johnson was not very good last year, but that was primarily due to a horrendous offensive scheme and a horrible supporting cast. Now offensive mastermind Kliff Kingsbury is calling plays and Kyler Murray is the new starting quarterback. Murray is a threat to run the ball, and that always helps running backs to be more productive because defenses need to pay attention to Murray's running abilities. Kingsbury will be creative in getting the ball to Johnson instead of just running him up the middle every play like the Cardinals did last year. On top of that, the Cardinals added a ton of receiving options including Andy Isabella and Hakeem Butler in the draft and Christian Kirk will have had another year to develop, causing defenses to divert their attention away from Johnson. Last year we saw David Johnson's worst-case scenario, and he still finished as the ninth-best running back in fantasy. That's his floor, but he is almost guaranteed to improve next year and his upside is as high as the top four running backs. Just look at what he did in 2016. Fantasy players should feel confident drafting Johnson fifth overall regardless of format.
