DeAndre Hopkins

WR, Cardinals

DeAndre Hopkins is without a doubt one of the best receivers in the league, but he most likely won’t have one of his typical seasons this year. History shows that receivers in their first year with a new team tend to perform worse than they had with their old team. We saw it last year with Odell Beckham Jr. Receivers do worse on new teams because the receiver needs to learn an entirely new offense and gain chemistry with the quarterback. Now, there have been exceptions to this trend like with Randy Moss in 2007, but it’s not necessarily worth taking a risk on Hopkins based on where he’s being drafted when you can get safer guys with similar upside at the same spot. Keep in mind that it’ll be especially hard for Hopkins to learn the offense and build chemistry this year because of Covid-19 limiting training camp as well. Hopkins is still a very good fantasy option, as he is an elite talent in an offense that will be pass-oriented now that he has been added to the fold. Kyler Murray is a good quarterback who will help Hopkins to produce, but there is a chance he doesn’t produce like the DeAndre Hopkins we all know and love, and that risk is enough for him to drop a few slots. Next year after Hopkins has already learned the offense and built chemistry with Kyler Murray it’ll be a different story, but for now be cautious drafting Hopkins and look to get him only if he falls to the late second or early third round.
