Mike Evans

WR, Buccaneers

1200px-U+25CB.svg.png

Mike Evans had another good season last year with 67 receptions for 1,157 yards and 8 touchdowns. That was with Jameis Winston at quarterback, however, and Winston is a gunslinger who loves to throw deep 50-50 balls, which are Evans’s specialty. Now Tom Brady is at quarterback, and he famously dislikes throwing 50-50 balls and is no longer as good at deep passes with his current age. Brady did have a relatively high deep completion percentage last year, but that was because he only threw it deep when his receiver was wide open, not because he was insanely accurate down the field. Evans will no longer be the top receiver in this offense with Brady, it will be Chris Godwin, who is much better on short and intermediate passes in the middle of the field, which is exactly the type of receiver Brady loves. In the red zone, Gronk will take a lot of Evans’s looks because he and Brady have so much chemistry in that part of the field, so Evans’s touchdown upside is lower than it has been in the past. Evans should still be a productive fantasy player because he is still a great receiver in the prime of his career, but Brady and Gronk coming in will hurt his value. He should not be drafted at his current ADP because he is a risky pick and doesn’t have the upside he once had, but Evans is worth drafting in the fourth round if available.
