T.J. Hockenson

TE, Lions

T.J. Hockenson is getting a lot of crap for last season but he wasn’t as bad as people are making it seem. First of all, Hockenson was a rookie, and it’s almost impossible for rookie tight ends to produce a lot. He should take a big jump in his second year. In 12 games Hockenson had 32 receptions for 367 yards and 2 touchdowns (43 receptions for 489 yards and 3 touchdowns over the course of an entire season). It’s important to note that Matthew Stafford missed four of those games, and Hockenson was definitely better with Stafford on the field. In his eight games with Stafford, Hockenson had 22 receptions for 296 yards and 2 touchdowns, which equates to 44 receptions for 592 yards and 4 touchdowns over the course of an entire season. Those numbers are better than the numbers Noah Fant put up last year, yet everyone is praising Fant’s season and saying the opposite about Hockenson’s. Marvin Jones dealt with some injuries last year, but every game Jones missed Hockenson missed as well, so those numbers are not skewed by Jones’s absence. The Lions did add D’Andre Swift in the draft and Kerryon Johnson will be healthy so they might run the ball more, but more running plays means more play action passes, almost all of which Hockenson will be on the field for because he is such a great blocker. Overall, T.J. Hockenson has very high upside so he is worth drafting as a late round pick.
