Justin Fields is one of the most athletic quarterbacks we have ever seen. He has elite arm strength but is also exceptional at running the football. Fields ran a 4.44 40 yard dash at his pro day and was expecting to be in the 4.3s. Only a fraction of quarterbacks rival that type of speed (guys like Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson, Randall Cunningham, etc.); he is going to be incredible on the ground. Fields has a great arm and is incredibly accurate on both short, medium, and deep passes. He is great when he is able to get the ball out quickly to his initial read and isn't as strong as an improviser as somebody like Patrick Mahomes. Fields is also great at taking care of the ball, as he rarely threw interceptions in college. In addition to his abilities on the field, Fields is a great leader who has proven that he can take his team far. He actually has the highest Wonderlic (a test that measures football IQ and character) score of any NFL player ever. Fields’s biggest problems come when he is not able to get the ball to his first read. He has trouble working through his progressions and can at times hold on to the ball for too long. That has made him late on some throws and has resulted in him getting sacked numerous times. We don’t know whether Fields’s slow progressions were his fault or simply a result of the system he was in, as Ohio State is known for being an offense reliant on the first read. There were also many examples of Fields working through his progressions quickly, but failing to pull the trigger quickly, so he has shown the ability to work through progressions efficiently. All of these issues are very coachable, too, so if he lands in the right place, Fields will be a star. Look at what Justin Herbert did as a rookie. He was believed to have the same problems working through progressions and he ended up being fine. Same with guys like Deshaun Watson. That does mean that Fields will need to sit and learn for a little before he can take over as a starting quarterback. Another big question mark with Fields is the fact that he has struggled with epilepsy, which could hurt his draft stock. Reports are that doctors believe Fields will outgrow his epilepsy, and he’s clearly been able to manage it throughout his career, so it doesn’t seem like a big problem. Epilepsy varies significantly on a case by case basis and can be very easy to control with medication, so this shouldn’t be a big problem. Some will blow it out of proportion and use it as an excuse to draft someone else when, in reality, it shouldn’t affect his stock at all. Overall, Justin Fields is a phenomenal prospect who has been over-analyzed to the point that he is starting to slide in mock drafts. The teams that pass on him will be sorry, because he probably has the highest upside out of any quarterback in this draft and should be a superstar that defines the future of the NFL.

Analytics-Based Prospect Grade: 96.3
