Zach Wilson looks like a clone of Patrick Mahomes coming out of college. He has an incredible arm and can make throws from every angle imaginable. Wilson is an elite improviser who can place the ball anywhere on the field, even when throwing on the run. Wilson can also make off-platform throws when fading away, falling to the ground, or being hit. He is a good athlete who can get outside the pocket and take off if he needs to, but he isn’t elite on the ground. Wilson has shown to be pretty good working through his progressions. There are some concerns with Wilson, however. He doesn’t have a good frame, which will cause durability issues. In addition, Wilson has really only been elite for one season. While Joe Burrow proved that one good season can indicate success in the NFL, it’s still concerning that Wilson hasn’t had sustained success in college. He also happened to have his good season during the year of Covid, so he didn’t need to deal with massive crowds making a ton of noise. There’s no telling what he will play like in a hostile environment in the pros. In addition, Wilson didn’t go up against an incredibly high level of competition at BYU, so he could struggle in the pros. Overall, Zach Wilson has a dynamic skill set, but he has a number of red flags that should prevent him from going before someone like Justin Fields. He will, in all likelihood, go before Fields anyways.

Analytics-Based Prospect Grade: 96.8
