Austin Ekeler

RB, Chargers

1200px-U+25CB.svg.png

Austin Ekeler is in a good offense that just improved its offensive line and he has next to no competition behind him. If you remove Ekeler’s week 4 game where he got injured and only played 3 snaps as well as his week 1 game with Tyrod Taylor at QB, Ekeler had 832 yards from scrimmage, 3 total touchdowns, and 52 catches in 8 games. That’s 1,664 yards from scrimmage, 6 total touchdowns, and 104 catches in 16 games. Ekeler is probably going to be the second best pass catcher at running back behind only Christian McCaffrey. He’s incredibly efficient when he gets the ball and will get a ton of yards. Ekeler is likely to improve when it comes to his goal line work because Joe Lombardi has come in as the offensive coordinator. He used to be on the Saints, and we saw how much goal line work Alvin Kamara got despite being a smaller back. Austin Ekeler is smaller than Alvin Kamara and probably won’t be as good on the goal line, but he’s still going to get more goal line carries than last year. The Chargers also have the most improved offensive line in the NFL this year. They completely rebuilt the line and it went from a weakness to a strength. Ekeler, even with practically no goal line work and a bad offensive line, was the 6th best running back in fantasy last year in half PPR points per game if you remove the week 4 game in which he got hurt. The argument can be made to draft Ekeler as high as 5 or 6 in PPR leagues. In standard, his value obviously takes a dip because he thrives on receptions, but he’s still a great option.
